THE BEST MOVIES OF 2021 SO FAR (Top10)

CHECK OUT OUR LIST TOP 10 MOVIES RELEASED SO FAR(2021)

The year continues to be bright, and as we head into the autumnal awards season, these are our picks for the finest movies of 2021

10. DAY OF DESTINY

Day of Destiny also known as D.O.D is a 2021 Nigerian sci-fi adventure film written and co-directed by Akay Mason and Abosi Ogba. Abosi Ogba made his directorial debut through this film. The film stars Olumide Oworu, Denola Grey, Norbert Young and Toyin Abraham in the lead roles. The film is based on the mysterious adventures of two teenage brothers who travel back in time by 20 years to change their fortunes of the family. It is also the first Nigerian family adventure film as well as Nigeria's first ever time traveler film and was also the first Nigerian film to be released in 2021.

D.O.D, Day of Destiny, or DUD for short, is a 2021 movie touted as the first sci-fi/time travel Nollywood flick. When one is confronted by the idea of a living breathing sentence housing the words “sci-fi”, “time travel”, and Nollywood, what comes to mind, forgivably, is that it will arrive as a dud, or, in other words, Day of Destiny. Here is a movie that ticks all the boxes for most quintessential Nollywood movies

Now down to why i made this 10th on the list, I loved everything about this movie, although it had a few tweaks with the ball effect regardless of that it was a dream come true for me.
I have always wanted to see nollywood movie producers dive into sci-fi and this is just amazing!

09. SWEET GIRL

SUMMARY:
It's a sprawling, bruising, sometimes convoluted, often emotionally exhausting drama with action sequences stitched into it.

It's about a man trying to get revenge for his wife's death from cancer at the hands of a depraved and indifferent pharmaceutical company while his daughter (Isabela Merced) is pulled along by the currents of his rage. Momoa's character, ex-military guy Ray Cooper, feels like one of those soft-spoken, "All-American" character parts, the kind that's currently being played by an array of fortysomething Anglo guys in baseball caps. As such, it asserts Momoa, who is half-Native Hawaiian and part Native American, as a representative everyman, just as relatable as somebody like Mark Wahlberg or Matt Damon. And it gives Momoa, who gained fame as Khal Drogo on "Game of Thrones" and Aquaman, a chance to show us sides he hasn't presented yet—in particular the distress of an ordinary (though large and tough) man who has no superpowers or cavalry, and must go it alone against enemies that get away with murder because the system is set up to rubber-stamp their profit-making.

08. VACATION FRIENDS

SUMMARY:
Clay Tarver’s ticklish buddy comedy, Vacation Friends, offers a plate full of fun and entertainment. As a whole, the film is so bad that it actually feels funny. These “for entertainment purposes” films should be put under open and serious debate to explore the psychology of the studios and producers who invest in these films. Let’s superficially explore the movie because it doesn’t even have any depth to fathom.

A middle-aged construction contractor, Marcus Parker (Lil Rel Howery), arrives in Mexico from Chicago with his long-time girlfriend, Emily Conway (Yvonne Orji). Marcus plans to propose to Emily for marriage in a week-long vacation and buys a romantic package in a 5-star hotel. Though, as he opens his luxurious room, the couple witnesses a ruined interior with water dripping from everywhere. Manager Maurillio apologizes for the mishap caused by guests in the Presidential suite above their room who evidently overfilled their Jacuzzi. Marcus tries to get another room for his vacation, but the manager informs them about the unavailability of any other room. Devastated, Marcus proposes to Emily in the lobby, who graciously accepts his proposal.

The budding love of the lovebirds is adored by the guests, Ron (John Cena) and his girlfriend, Kyla (Yvonne Orji), who invite Marcus and Emily to stay with them in their Presidential Suite to make up for the “Jacuzzi” tragedy. After a bit of hesitation, a reserved Marcus agrees, unaware of the dangers that lay ahead.

07THE MITCHELLS VS THE MACHINES

SUMMARY:
The story follows a dysfunctional family, The Mitchells. The elder daughter, Katie Mitchell aspires to become a filmmaker. Being unfit, Katie found her solace in movies. She spent all her childhood making spoof-ish videos on Youtube and now wants to pursue the career. She applies for a California film school and gets selected.

However, her nature-loving dad Rick Mitchell couldn’t understand his daughter’s inclination towards movie-making. A classic conflict between father-duo turns depressing when Rick accidentally breaks Katie’s laptop, a day before her college day. Katie is devastated and the incident creates a further gap between the father and the daughter. Rick, in his remorse and effort to mend the gap, decides to drop his daughter to California via a road trip. The mother Linda and younger brother Aaron agree to the plan and Katie feels helpless. She just wanted to get away from the family as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, an innovator in Silicon Valley, Mark Bowman (don’t miss the pun) introduces his latest invention called Home Robots. These AI-Powered Robots are multitasking bots that can accomplish any task. However, Mark’s earlier innovation, an AI named PAL, feels dejected and in order to take revenge infects the code-source of Robots, thus turning them against humans. A machine apocalypse strikes the world while the Mitchells enjoy their road trip. When Katie and her family understand the gravity of the situation, they decide to save the world. Katie learns from two defective robots, Eric and Deborah Bot that there is a kill code that can shut down all the robots.

The Mitchells embark on a journey from Silicon valley to PAL Labs HQ to end the problem from the root. But Pal is waiting for them, along with its deadly Stealthbots. The film further explores the family’s effort to save the world and patch up their relations during the journey.

06. THE TOMORROW WAR

SUMMARY:
Chris Pratt is the heart and soul of this movie, and we follow him as he fights these monsters from the future and for most part, all of them are fighting a losing battle. Somewhere in the story of this battle lies a deep and emotional fatherly impact wherein one person selfishly goes to the future in order to prevent his daughter from falling to that same horrid fate.

We follow the character of Dan (Played by Chris Pratt) in The Tomorrow War. He has lived a simple life, working a decent job as a teacher, but his real talent for science and chemistry lies wasted. In spite of trying so hard to acquire a job which aligns with his deepest passion, his bad luck forces him to go back to school.

One fine evening, a football stadium in the US gets invaded by a portal and what comes out of it are humans, but from the future. They proclaim that an alien species has invaded the world and the only way to prevent it is to stop it in the future and end the conflict for good. The prevalent dynamic of kids and youngsters being forced to go in the war is turned upside down as now it is the adults who have to go into the year 2051, for a week, and kill as many monsters as they possibly can. Some are there because of their own personal volition and the others are forced against their will. Each living man and woman is turned into a soldier, and for one week, their life is controlled by a thin fate.

05. OUTSIDE THE WIRE

SUMMARY:
Outside The Wire is set in the year 2036 and deals with terrorist activity in Eastern Europe. The American troops are deployed as peacekeepers in the lawless frontier between Ukraine and Russia, but their main mission is to stop a Krasny warlord, Viktor Koval who wants to make Ukraine a part of Russia. For that matter of fact, he increases his militia activity to gain the codes for the nukes in the deserted nuclear establishments in Ukraine, built during the time of the Cold War.

An android military officer, Captain Leo (Anthony Mackie) is assigned the mission to stop Koval. In his assignment, he chooses a flout drone pilot, Harp (Damson Idris), recently accused of killing 2 marine officers in warzone combat, deploying a drone missile against the orders of his seniors. Harp is sent to learn the value of collateral from Leo by helping him with on-field combat, but the way he learns it is totally unimaginable. The secret is the end, and it is surely going to hit you like an incoming missile, unexpected and booming.

The mission to stop Viktor Koval, the terror of the Balkans takes place outside the American safe zone. A lawless frontier which is constantly referred to as the land “outside the wire.” This land is filled with terrorists, Russian extremists, and Ukrainian refugees. Captain Leo is handed the task to deal with this mixed group because he is a black man who looks like no harm. Captain Leo quotes, “My sleeve might say the US, but my face conveys neutrality. Makes people calm.” Leo gels with the refugees of the lawless frontier and is able to carry out his mission without suspicion.

04AWAKE

SUMMARY:
Jill Adams (Gina Rodriguez) is an ex-soldier, ex-drug addict, and current single mother struggling to make ends meet. For one reason or another (presumably due to her history with drug abuse), Jill’s two children—her teenage son Noah (Lucius Hoyos) and her younger daughter Matilda (Ariana Greenblatt)—do not live with her, but with their grandmother. But none of that matters after a mysterious global event causes technology to stop working, and people to stop sleeping. Jill and her kids are driving when it happens, crash their car into a lake, but manage to survive.

It quickly becomes clear that Jill’s daughter Matilda is one of the few people left in the world who can sleep. A psychologist (Finn Jones) wants Jill to take Matilda to the “hub” where they will study her, in an attempt to find a cure. Apparently, there is another woman at the hub already, who is also able to sleep. But the clock is ticking—humans can only go so long without sleeping, and everyone is rapidly losing their minds.

For reasons that are not explained, there are still a few cars that do work. (It has something to do with “boosting their batteries.”) Jill steals a car for her family, and she concocts a plan to break into the hub, free the other woman who can’t sleep, and ask her to raise Matilda for her. Jill believes everyone—except her daughter and this other woman—is going to die. She also doesn’t trust that the doctor in charge at the hub to research her daughter without harming her. Jill knows that doctor—Dr. Murphy (Jennifer Jason Leigh)—from her days in the army, and indeed helped her use sleep deprivation as a form of torture to interrogate enemies.

03FATHERHOOD

Fatherhood is a 2021 American comedy-drama film directed by Paul Weitz from a screenplay by Weitz and Dana Stevens, based on the 2011 memoir Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love by Matthew Logelin. The film stars Kevin Hart, Alfre Woodard, Frankie R. Faison, Lil Rel Howery, DeWanda Wise, Anthony Carrigan, Melody Hurd, and Paul Reiser, and follows a new father who struggles to raise his daughter after the sudden death of his wife.

SUMMARY:
Liz Logelin (Deborah Ayorinde) suffers a complication as soon as she gives birth. She doesn’t survive the health complications. Matt Logelin is left to fend for himself in a situation he wasn’t even scarcely prepared for. With a just born in his hand and a whole bunch of responsibilities that come with that, Matt doesn’t know what to say or what to do. His mother-in-law, Marion, suggests that he should give the child to them. Even Matt’s mother agrees that at least he should move to their city if he doesn’t want to give the child altogether. But Matt agrees to neither. He has his job in his city, and he feels that if there is anyone who should be bringing up the child, it should be him.

The film takes us through the challenges he faces as a father. I say challenges because those were the things he never thought he would do and that too alone. The role of a father in our society is always complementary to that of a mother. It’s not because we males do not have that emotional quotient, but we are more than happy to take the back seat as it is a much easier thing to do. Bringing up a child is no cinch, and Matt never believed that the vicissitudes of his life would turn into a tide and blow him away.

02. WITHOUT REMORSE

SUMMARY:
The gist of the film is easy: angry Navy SEAL seeks revenge after his very pregnant wife is brutally riddled with bullet holes onscreen. The confusion comes in answering the questions of why she was killed, who did it and what this has to do with the U.S. government. This is one of those super-convoluted conspiracy theory movies where nothing makes sense and you simply stop caring. Saviors show up inexplicably at just the right time. People come off as evil for the sole purpose of misleading us. There’s no character development, a lot of patriotic posturing, and the villain gives a lecture that must have been written before they cast a Black actor as its recipient. Despite endless gunfire and a lot of shit blowing up, most of the action sequences fail to quicken the pulse.

“Without Remorse” opens with Navy SEALs led by Kelly’s superior officer, Karen Greer (Jodie Turner-Smith) attempting a rescue mission that goes in a direction Kelly was not briefed about beforehand. Kelly glares at sinister bigshot Robert Ritter (Jamie Bell), and not for the last time. Soon after, several of Kelly’s team are murdered in gang-style executions or intentional hit-and-runs. Making it personal, the bad guys take out Kelly’s family as well. Kelly shoots three of the four assassins, but passes out from his own bullet wounds before he can finish off the fourth. He awakens to Greer informing him that CIA Secretary Clay (Guy Pearce) has no intention of pursuing justice for Pam. She was collateral damage, retaliation for the earlier SEALs mission that resulted in the deaths of several Russian agents. I wont explain any further, its a must watch!

01KATE

SUMMARY:
Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is an assassin working for Varrick (Woody Harrelson) since a very young age. For her last assignment before retirement, Kate has to finish Kijima’s (Jun Kunimura) family as they are the biggest crime family in Japan.

The movie begins in Osaka, where Kate kills Kentaro, the brother of Kijima. She shoots Kentaro in front of his daughter Ani (Miku Martineau).

10 months later, Kate is in Tokyo and her final assignment is to kill Kijima. Before she can kill him, Kate is poisoned with Polonium 204 and suffers from Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS). The doctor informs her that she has less than 24 hours left to live. In that time, she has to find out who poisoned her and kill them.

Kate finds Ani, who is the niece of Kijima and decides to use her to get to Kijima. Ani tells Kate that the only way to talk to Kijima is through Renji (Tadanobu Asano).

Renji sees an opportunity to kill Ani and finish the bloodline of Kijima, so he can take over the family. Kate saves Ani from Renji’s men and a friendship develops between the two. Ani promises to help Kate in finding Kijima, as she blames him for her father’s death.

Ani leads Kate to her family house where Kijima is. Kate calls Varrick to inform him about her plan to kill Kijima and to say goodbye to him.

Will Kate kill Kijima? What will happen to Ani? What is the truth behind Varrick?
